A curated collection of rooftop bars, hidden speakeasies, and cocktail experiences that made nights in Lisbon and Porto worth staying out a little later for.

Some of my favorite nights in Portugal started with one cocktail and turned into an experience I didn't want to end. From rooftop drinks overlooking Lisbon to hidden speakeasies and intimate cocktail bars tucked throughout Porto, I found places where the atmosphere was just as memorable as what was in my glass. This collection brings together the bars that made me stay out a little later, order one more drink, and discover a different side of Portugal after dark.

A Lisbon rooftop I'd time for sunset.

SEEN was the perfect place to end the evening with a cocktail after dinner. The rooftop atmosphere and views made it worth the stop, but if I did it again, I'd arrive about 30 minutes before sunset. I got there just after the sun had gone down, and while the views were still beautiful, this is definitely a place I'd want to experience as Lisbon transitions from day to night.

Best for: Sunset cocktails, after-dinner drinks, date nights, and a dressier night out.

The Kissaten

Good drinks, good music, and absolutely no need to rush.

The Kissaten was one of those places where I was perfectly happy just sitting with a cocktail and enjoying the atmosphere. The music was good, the drinks were well made, and the entire space had a relaxed energy that made it easy to settle in. It wasn't about having a big night out—it was about having a really good drink somewhere that felt intimate and effortlessly cool.

Best for: Music lovers, solo drinks, low-key nights, and anyone who prefers a listening-bar atmosphere over a crowded cocktail scene.

Sacra

A late-night bar that somehow still feels intimate.

Sacra gave me another side of Lisbon nightlife without feeling overwhelming. The music was one of my favorite parts of the experience, the cocktails were good, and during my visit it never felt overly crowded. It's a great option when you want to stay out later without necessarily committing to a loud, packed night out.

Best for: Late-night cocktails, music, intimate nights out, and travelers who want nightlife without the chaos.

Santa Joana Bar

An easy excuse to stay at the bar a little longer.

I visited Santa Joana for dinner during my stay at Locke de Santa Joana, but I also came back another time specifically for cocktails at the bar inside the restaurant. The greenery and beautiful interiors give the space so much character, and the cocktails matched the atmosphere. It works equally well as somewhere to start your evening before dinner or settle in for one last drink afterward.

Best for: Pre-dinner cocktails, after-dinner drinks, solo travelers, and anyone who appreciates a beautifully designed space.

Atman

The knock on the door is part of the experience.

Atman delivered exactly what I want from a speakeasy: a little mystery before you even get inside. Having to find the entrance and knock on the door immediately made the experience feel different, but the cocktails and hospitality are what made me stay. The staff was knowledgeable and made the experience approachable rather than overly serious, which made for a genuinely good night out.

Best for: Speakeasy lovers, cocktail enthusiasts, date nights, and anyone who enjoys finding places that don't announce themselves from the street.

Curioso

A little more energy without becoming a full-blown party.

Curioso had the liveliest energy of the cocktail bars I visited in Porto. Not crowded or club-like—just more people, more movement, and a little more buzz in the room. The cocktail combinations were interesting, and during my visit there was even a guest bartender behind the bar, which made an already creative experience feel a little more unexpected.

Best for: Creative cocktails, a livelier night out, groups, dates, and anyone who likes seeing what bartenders can do beyond the classics.

Apotecário

Part cocktail bar, part choose-your-own-adventure.

Apotecário was easily one of the more unusual cocktail experiences I had in Porto. The hidden setting is incredibly intimate, with only 12 guests allowed inside at a time, but my favorite part was actually choosing my drink. Instead of simply ordering from a traditional menu, I spun a display of cards, stopped it, chose my card—and let that determine my cocktail. It made ordering the drink part of the experience itself.

Best for: Unique cocktail experiences, intimate nights, adventurous drinkers, and anyone who loves a hidden bar.

BOSCO

Lunch inside, cocktails outside.

I originally came to BOSCO for lunch, but afterward I moved outside and stayed for a cocktail—which gave me a completely different experience of the space. The outdoor area is relaxed and offers some views over Porto, although I wouldn't necessarily come here specifically for the view. I'd come for the atmosphere: somewhere you can transition from a meal into drinks without needing to immediately move on to your next destination.

Best for: Daytime cocktails, drinks after lunch, relaxed afternoons, and groups looking for somewhere to linger.

Guindais Garden Bar & Restaurant

Come for the lawn, the river, and the trains crossing above Porto.

Guindais feels less like somewhere you simply stop for a drink and more like somewhere you can settle in for a while. With views toward the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Douro River, you can lounge outside and watch the trains cross the bridge above the city. I visited for lunch and wasn't particularly impressed by the food, but I'd absolutely return later in the day for cocktails. I think sunset and early evening are probably when this setting really comes into its own.

Best for: Sunset drinks, river views, relaxed afternoons, groups, and anyone looking for an outdoor place to lounge.

Bello Rooftop at The Rebello Hotel

An easy sunset cocktail with one of Porto's most recognizable views.

Staying at The Rebello made stopping at Bello Rooftop for a pre-dinner cocktail almost too convenient. You don't actually face the setting sun from the rooftop, but you get to watch the warm sunset colors wash over Porto and the Dom Luís I Bridge across the river—which creates its own beautiful view. Would I cross the city specifically for it? Maybe, although Porto has plenty of rooftop options. But if you're staying at The Rebello, I'd absolutely take advantage of having this view waiting upstairs before heading out for the night.

Best for: Pre-dinner cocktails, Douro views, sunset atmosphere, and especially guests staying at The Rebello.
